Core Mathematics

Level 3 Certificate

COURSE OVERVIEW

Core Mathematics is a recently developed course at Post 16. It is a Level 3 Certificate designed to be equivalent to an AS over two years with UCAS points accredited. It is currently run as a one-year course. The content builds on GCSE level mathematics with 80% of the content Level 2 and 20% Level 3. This is a great opportunity to continue learning mathematics, looking at real life problems including finance and developing your conceptual understanding.

Students will explore different reallife problems, building on their maths GCSE skills. Students will use critical thinking, working independently as well as collaboratively in groups. These problems will involve statistics, finance and modelling. Students will also explore probability, risk analysis and Fermi estimation.

Curriculum:

As a student of Maths you will develop your knowledge, reasoning and analytical skills and the ability to solve problems through a variety of different lessons. You will have success in all Maths lessons you attend and will have many lightbulb moments as you discover new ideas and understanding of those new ideas. You will develop a greater understanding of the use of Maths in the wider world and will understand how this may relate to you in your future career.

Courses involving the use of data, scientific or financial elements including: computing, education, health, engineering, robotics and statistics.

Additional Entry Requirements

Grade 4 or above in GCSE Mathematics.

Assessment

100% examination.

Opportunities for work related activities

University taster sessions and working with companies such as banks on finance projects. Working with current data from a range of sources and looking at mathematical aspects of topical issues.
