A Level

COURSE OVERVIEW

Year 1

Recording

Learn how to capture, edit and mix audio to produce professional sounding recordings. You’ll develop your understanding of software and hardware to explore a range of techniques for capturing, editing and manipulating sound. These skills will help you understand the impact of music technology on creative processes in the studio and how they can be applied across a range of creative sectors.

Technology-Based Composition

Use your developing knowledge, skills and understanding to create your own music. You can explore techniques such as sampling, automation and sequencing for developing compositional ideas. This component is a licence to experiment with sound and be as creative as you wish using the latest software and hardware to realise your ideas.

Year 2

Producing & Analysing

This practical component allows you to demonstrate your knowledge, skills and understanding for real-world situations. Recordings, covering a range of technical and musical styles and quality, are supplied. You will be expected to respond to each unfinished job showing your ability, creativity and ingenuity.

Listening & Analysing

You’ll have the chance to develop your skills in identifying effects and their associated parameter settings, along with being able to explain the principles behind the effects and their sonic character. This contextually driven component allows you to discuss the influence of socio-economics, technology and innovation on the application of music technology

Curriculum

This qualification will support students in forming personal and meaningful relationships with music technology through the development of musical knowledge, understanding and skills. These include recording, technology-based composition, listening, analysing and producing. Students will be encouraged to engage with a wide range of music technology techniques and develop an understanding of the historical and cultural contexts of the use of music technology in the creation and production of music. This qualification will also allow students to develop particular strengths and interests, encourage lifelong learning and provide access to higher education and university degree courses in music technology and music technology-related subjects, as well as music technology-related and other careers.

Progression

The course is designed to give you a broad and balanced understanding of all facets of music technology for real-world practical situations. A-Level Music Technology offers excellent preparation for higher education courses in music, engineering, creative music technology and production, as well as enabling students to develop their own interests in culture, history and media.

Careers

As well as full-time employment, the skills developed on this course can be applied through a range of part time, self employed and contractual work. Careers include: music producer, sound designer, composer, engineer, mastering engineer, technician, game composer, session musician & foley artist.

Additional Entry Requirements

6 to 9 in GCSE Music in GCSE Music/Distinction in BTEC Music/Ability to read music is non-essential but beneficial.
