COURSE OVERVIEW

Year 1

Principles of Anatomy and Physiology: Understand the key components of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems.

The Physiology of Fitness: Create gym training programs and understand the importance of testing your body to the limit.

Assessing Risk in Sport: Understand the numerous risks and ways to reduce these in sport.

Fitness Testing for Sport and exercise: Test your fitness levels by understanding your body and what makes it tick.

Year 2

Sports Coaching: Develop your knowledge of coaching others.

Sports Nutrition: Apply the relevant nutritional components to help improve your sports performance.

Outdoor and Adventurous Activities: Climbing, kayaking, high ropes and OAA based activities.

Curriculum:

As a student of Sport you will develop an understanding of the body’s systems. This is imperative in the sports industry so that professionals can help support people who are taking part in sport and exercise. For example, an athlete can go from rest to sprinting in a matter of seconds, whereas an endurance athlete can continue exercising for many hours at a time. You will explore the structure of the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory and energy systems. This course will give you the detailed core knowledge required to progress to coaching and instruction in the sports industry or further study. You will also explore the process required for screening clients and assessing their lifestyle and nutritional intake. You will learn to analyse and interpret this information in order to help develop plans for improving performance or the individual’s fitness, health and overall well-being.

As a sport student you will also experience the scope and breadth of the available career opportunities in the industry. You will have opportunities to practice the steps needed to follow a chosen pathway in sport. You will encounter people from different areas of the industry and use their knowledge and passion for sport to open your eyes to future career opportunities.

Progression

On successful completion of this Level 3 qualification, you could go on to study a range of courses at university such as sport sciences, sports coaching, sport & exercise development or sports journalism. A range of work-based training opportunities such as apprenticeships would also be available to you.

Gym instructor; personal trainer; sports coach, sports coordinator, teaching, physiotherapy.

Additional Entry Requirements

Grade 4 or above in English and Science. Previous completion of GCSE PE or BTEC level 2 is highly advantageous.

Assessment

Coursework based with practical sport elements in every module. Exam.

Opportunities for work related activities

Throughout the duration of the course students are able to work with local primary schools delivering festivals and there are opportunities to attend educational trips.
